Anurag Kashyap summoned in sexual offence case

Aurag Kashyap has been summoned to Versova police station in Mumbai to record his statement in the sexual offence case registered against him by an actress. This comes days after the actress, along with her lawyer, registered a protest against the way the Mumbai Police was approaching the case. They demanded that Anurag Kashyap be arrested at the earliest, and had even threatened to sit on a hunger strike if the investigation does not pick up pace. The said actress, earlier this month, had filed a case against Anurag Kashyap accusing him of rape. The case was registered at the Versova police station. She had then raised questions as to why Anurag Kashyap was "sitting coolly in his house", even as she has been called for questioning several times since she registered the case.

Reiterating this, the actress's lawyer said, "Had the accused been a poor man, like a rickshaw driver or any one, the police would have immediately beaten him and arrested him. Whereas in this case they have not moved an inch. Why have they not even called him to police station to take his statement?"

He added, "Till now Versova police has not even called Anurag Kashyap for statement recording while almost everyday the victim has to go and take part in investigation. The victim has identified the spot, the house where she was raped and had been called for medical examination on three days and made to sit for 6-7 hours at a stretch."

Leaders ask protesting farmers to follow Covid-19 protocols

A massive nationwide farmers’ protest is being observed in India on Friday. Leaders including Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has asked farmers to maintain social distancing norms as India continues to report the highest number of cases in the world. Since farmers protests will be held throughout most parts of the country, it could lead to a sharp increase in cases as such protests often see social distancing norms being maintained. It remains to be seen whether the country’s farmers manage to successfully protest while adhering to all Covid-19 protocols.

US coronavirus tally crosses 70 lakh

The United States now has over 70 lakh coronavirus cases, the highest number of recorded infections in the world. The number of infections reported so far in the US equals 20 per cent of the world’s total reported cases. The grim milestone comes after an outbreak in the Midwest region in September, according to a Reuters tally. It may be noted that the latest milestone comes just days after the nation surpassed over 2 lakh Covid-19 deaths, also the world’s highest death toll from the deadly virus. Each day, over 700 people are dying from the virus in US.

SinoVac says its coronavirus vaccine will be ready by early 2021

Chinese pharmaceutical company SinoVac on Thursday said its coronavirus vaccine should be ready by early 2021 for worldwide distribution by early 2021, including the United States. Speaking to news agency Reuters, Sinovac’s CEO Yin Weidong, vowed to apply to the US Food and Drug Administration to sell CoronaVac in the US if it passes its third and final round of testing in humans. Yin said he personally has been given the experimental vaccine. "At the very beginning, our strategy was designed for China and for Wuhan. Soon after that in June and July we adjusted our strategy, that is to face the world," Yin said, referring to the Chinese city were the virus first emerged.

India coronavirus tally has crossed 58 lakh after 86,052 cases were reported in the last 24 hours. A total of 1,141 deaths have also been reported.

China reports first local cases of coronavirus in over a month: Report

China has detected a few local asymptomatic Covid-19 infections in more than a month. According to a Bloomberg report, two port workers responsible for unloading frozen seafood tested positive, raising an alarm that contaminated imports could be transmitting the deadly virus.

India’s total coronavirus tally has exceeded 58 lakh

India’s total coronavirus tally has exceeded 58 lakh as the country continues to record the highest rise in daily cases in the world. The death toll in the country also crossed the 90,000-mark this week as the country continues to report over 1,000 single day deaths. Though the number of deaths appears to be small in comparison to the number of cases, India’s per day deaths is one of the highest in the world. On the brighter side, active cases in India are falling rapidly and the number of daily recoveries has exceeded the number of cases that are being registered, indicating that the country’s recovery rate is rising rapidly. India’s fatality rate is also one of the lowest in the world, the health ministry said earlier.

2 Haryana BJP leaders term farm bills 'anti-farmer'

Days after Union minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal resigned over the Centre's farm bills, Haryana BJP leaders Parminder Singh Dhull and Rampal Majra dubbed the Centre's farm bills "anti-farmer", claiming that the apprehensions about the minimum support price were not unfounded. The two former legislators said many farmer outfits were protesting against the Centre's farm reforms and their voices should be heard. "These bills are anti-farmers, anti-people. These reforms will deal a blow to the dreams of Sir Chhotu Ram, considered the messiah of farmers, who wanted to see the peasants prosperous and happy," Dhull said.

Govt promised double income by 2022, but making farmers poorer: Tejashwi Yadav

RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav has attacked the government over the farm bills, saying it had promised to double farmers' income by 2022 but these farm bills will make them poorer. "The government has made our 'anndata' a puppet through its 'fund data'. The farm bills are anti-farmer and have left them dejected. The government had said that they'll double farmers' income by 2022 but these bills will make them poorer. The agriculture sector has been corporatised," Tejashwi Yadav said.

MSP will be taken away, farmers will be forced to become slaves: Priyanka Gandhi

Minimum Support Price (MSP) will be taken away from farmers. They will be forced to become slaves of trillions through contract farming. Neither the price nor the honor. Farmers will become a labourer on their own farms. The BJP's Agricultural Bills reminds the East India Company Raj. We will not let this injustice happen: Priyanka Gandhi Vadra

Rahul Gandhi says bills will enslave farmers

Intensifying their protests against the contentious farm bills, several farmer bodies have called for a national shutdown or 'Bharat Bandh' on Friday, September 25. The nationwide protest or Bharat Bandh has been called by the All India Kisan Sangharsh Coordination Committee (AIKSCC), All India Kisan Mahasangh (AIKM) and Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) against the farm bills. Despite Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several Union ministers' assurances, farmer bodies have expressed apprehension that the three bills, passed in Parliament, will pave a way for dismantling the minimum support price (MSP) system, leaving them at the "mercy" of big corporates.

In Punjab, where 31 farmer bodies have come together to support the call for Bharat Bandh, farmers have already started a three-day rail blockade against the farm bills. In view of the farmers' protests and the Bharat Bandh, Northern Railway has cancelled some trains. Stay tuned for all LIVE updates on the farmers' protest against the farm bills.

Unemployment crisis: Over 60 lakh lost jobs

Formal sector unemployment has been rising sharply ever since a strict lockdown was imposed in the country towards the end of March. The 20th wave of CMIE’s Consumer Pyramids Household Survey (CPHS) has now revealed that nearly 6.6 million or 66 lakh white collar professionals (WCP) lost jobs between May and August.

White collar professionals like software engineers, physicians, teachers, accountants and analysts have suffered the biggest job loss among all salaried employees affected by the pandemic, according to the survey. CMIE clarified that WCPs do not include qualified self-employed professional entrepreneurs.

Employment among such professionals peaked in India during May-August 2019 at 18.8 million or 1.88 crore. The number gradually fell to 18.1 million or 1.81 crore in January-April 2020.

Biden slams Trump's 'criminal' virus response

US Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden has condemned President Donald Trump's handling of the pandemic. A recording released earlier this month revealed Trump admitting to downplaying the threat posed by Covid-19 at the beginning of the outbreak in the US, although the president has since claimed he "up-played" it.

“He knew it and did nothing. It’s close to criminal,” Biden said of his Republican rival at a town hall event held in Scranton, Pennsylvania, on Thursday. "This president should step down," he added. Almost 200,000 people have died of coronavirus in the US since the pandemic began.

Australia to let more citizens come home

The Australian government says come mid-October it will allow 6,000 citizens a week - 2,000 more than currently allowed - to come home as Melbourne’s second wave comes under control. PM Scott Morrison said more than 24,000 Australians stranded overseas had registered to return.

In July, the country capped the number of returnees to ease the strain on the mandatory hotel quarantine system. Mistakes in that system had led to the virus's re-emergence in June in the state of Victoria.

However, expats had complained this policy meant flights home were near impossible to secure - with the London to Sydney route for example taking only 30 passengers per flight.

Sino-Indian Border Conflict: Has the Dragon Bitten More than He Can Chew

Much has happened in the past one month at the Line of Actual Control in East Ladakh and the situation does not seem to de-escalate in spite of a great deal of restraint by India. There has been a great buzz in the media and elsewhere of the Foreign Minster’s talks of the two nations at Moscow recently with the announcement of a five point joint declaration, which fell short of expectations of most Geo- Strategic experts. Everyone has now one question to ask; “What is the way ahead?” Do we have the answer to this million dollar question.

If we go back in time, it would be worthwhile to recollect the statement made by Xi Jinping in the 18th Party Congress meeting, in the year 2012 when he took over as General Secretary of the Communist Party of China. Today he wears many hats i.e President of the People’s Republic of China, Chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC) and the General Secretary of the Communist Party of China. He had alluded to his signature slogan the “Chinese Dream“. “This dream can be said to be the dream of a strong nation, And for the military, it is a dream of a strong military”. The aim which was propagated by him then was to recover all territories which the Chinese considered as most important to them.

Many analysts have attributed the present incursions to the COVID situation and India’s building up of strategic lines of communication in Ladakh which is far from the truth. The Chinese dream had already taken shape in 2012 with the three major dimensions of war i.e public opinion, psychological and legal warfare being addressed in a very planned and deliberate manner. The planning for the present incursions in Ladakh started as early as 2018. If one would be watching the Chinese intentions, it could be observed that from the year 2018-19 onwards, the Chinese military writing had an increased reference to training, India as the identified enemy, and references on how to strengthen Pakistan.

It was therefore only a matter of timing that became relevant, as the PLA had made themselves battle ready, before their higher leadership decided to move into Ladakh in May 2020. The Chinese realised that the Indian economy had already taken a beating much before COVID, and were badly impacted thereafter by the spread of this virus. They did not bargain that India would stand firm and be resolute in their response to this Chinese aggression. It would be pertinent to mention, that the PLA had its last battle experience in 1979, with the Vietnamese Army, where it lost almost 26000 of its soldiers. The Sino-Vietnamese war is generally perceived in the West as humiliating for Chinese forces. The PLA is now up against a highly trained mountain warfare Army as was evident by the action of the Indian Army on the South Bank of Pangong Tso in the night of 29/30 August 2020 where the heights of Black top, Helmet Top,  Mukhpari and Reching La tops were occupied even before the PLA could blink.

This action of the Indian Army, where the SFF troops were used, who is Tibetan in origin, seems to have sent a strong message to the Chinese as well as to the Tibetans in Tibet. The Chinese now seem to be worried as the scenario has not worked to their liking. There are no face-saving measures available now for them to withdraw. Therefore, the Chinese are buying time and the present talks are an outcome of this strategy.

The current situation on the Line of Actual Control, therefore, presents the following options:

Option A.      The present force levels with the PLA Army do not suggest a scenario for an all-out war. (In mountains for an attacker to overcome a defender a combat ratio of minimum 6:1 is required, whereas the present combat ratio between the two armies is 1:1.) There is also no possibility to escalate in the sectors other than Ladakh, as had been earlier reported that presence of PLA troops was observed on the Himachal and Uttarkhand borders at Shipkila and Barahoti areas respectively. Therefore, operations in the form of skirmishes could continue to happen and remain localised in the region of Ladakh. Once the winter sets in, the armies of both the nations would remain entrenched in their respective areas and the conflict would therefore be non-kinetic in nature.

Option B.      The other option being, that the Chinese would de-mobilise partially from their occupied areas, reduce force levels and equipment and have a minimum presence in their claimed areas.

Option C.      The Indian Army would take offensive action to evict the PLA  from the occupied areas, leading to a limited conflict. However, escalation of such a conflict to other areas cannot be guaranteed.

There is also some discussion amongst the experts, whether this situation could also escalate in the maritime domain. Presently, it seems unlikely unless the Pakistan Navy enjoins itself into this conflict. The PLA navy has its hands full in the South China Sea and therefore in the current scheme of things, the conflict would remain land centric and in all probability Option, A seems most likely.

Therefore it would be prudent to assess that the Indian Army needs to be prepared for a long haul, as it is unlikely that the situation is going to ease out much in the near future. It would not be out of place here, to mention the Sumdorong Chu incident, where the standoff started in June 1986 and lasted for more than a year. It was only after the intervention of the two head of states that the issue could be resolved. A similar scenario may get replayed here and one could await a meeting between our Prime Minister Shri Narender Modi and Xi Jinping in the near future towards a resolution of this conflict. Till then let’s wait and watch.

Drops in GDP/increase in poverty can cause an increase in Population

Population bomb

Population bomb refers to the explosive growth in the human Population. Population bomb is not only a problem in India; it has reached a menacing proportion all over The World, especially in the poorer countries.

The developed countries in the west or in countries like Japan which are rich enough to employ all their people according to their abilities, the growth of population may prove to be a boon, for the rapid growth of industries and national wealth always need greater work-force to implement the program of development in ever expanding sphere.

But in a developing country like India, with a backward economy and little scope for fruitful employment, millions of people find no work to do. The unemployed, having nothing to do and without an ensured living, are left frustrated and demoralized, losing their faith in life itself.

We all can agree to the fact that poorer a country the greater is the growth rate of its population. India, caught in the morass of her age old poverty, finds herself in the midst of a population explosion. The population that was less than 400 million in the 1940’s is about 121 billion in 2014. As a result of this, the plans to control population growth have failed to cope with the enormous problem of unemployment.

More than 70% of Indians live in villages, and most of them languish in their dark, dreary nooks; the fruits of our plans have not quite reached them. The poor in India are ignorant and superstitious, and so cannot see the advantages of planned family. These poor people do not have the education necessary for planning their present with a view to ensure a better future. This is why while their hopes wear-off; they leap in the dark and break their neck, making things grimmer for their world.

Family planning as an official Programme was launched in 1952. The people were reminded of the advantages of small families, of healthy and happy children and of the need for eradicating the age old poverty.

But even the family welfare has a lot more to achieve, for the population in India has already become about 130 billion and at the rate of 33 new births per second it may very soon become 150 billion and then 200 billion and so on. As one of the poorest countries in the world India cannot survive this challenge and in face of such explosion all the plans would be an exercise in futility.
